A comparison of in situ vs. ex situ filtration methods on the assessment of dissolved and particulate metals at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Cotte, Laura; Waeles, Mathieu; Pernet-coudrier, Benoit; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Cathalot, Cecile; Riso, Ricardo D..
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the filtration method (in situ vs. ex situ) on the dissolved/particulate partitioning of 12 elements in hydrothermal samples collected from the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge; MAR). To do so, dissolved ( <0.45 mu m) and particulate Mg, Li, Mn, U, V, As, Ba, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu were measured using different techniques (HR-ICP-MS, ICP-AES and CCSA). Using in situ filtration as a baseline, we showed that ex situ filtration (on-board and on shore after freezing) resulted in an underestimation of the dissolved pool, which was counterbalanced by an overestimation of the particulate pool for almost all the elements studied. We also showed that on-board filtration was acceptable for the...

A dual sensor device to estimate fluid flow velocity at diffuse hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Rodier, Philippe; Tivey, M. K.; Singh, H.; Schultz, A.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
Numerous attempts have been made over the last thirty years to estimate fluid flow rates at hydrothermal vents, either at the exit of black smoker chimneys or within diffuse flow areas. In this study, we combine two methods to accurately estimate fluid flow velocities at diffuse flow areas. While the first method uses a hot film anemometer that performs high-frequency measurements, the second allows a relatively rapid assessment of fluid flow velocity through video imagery and provides in situ data to calibrate the sensor. Measurements of flow velocities on hydrothermal diffuse flow areas were obtained on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). They range from 1.1 to 4.9 mm/s at the substratum level, in low-temperature (4.5-16.4 degrees C) diffuse flow areas from...

A hybrid zone between Bathymodiolus mussel lineages from eastern Pacific hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Johnson, Shannon B.; Won, Yong-jin; Harvey, Julio B. J.; Vrijenhoek, Robert C..
Background: The inhabitants of deep-sea hydrothermal vents occupy ephemeral island-like habitats distributed sporadically along tectonic spreading-centers, back-arc basins, and volcanically active seamounts. The majority of vent taxa undergo a pelagic larval phase, and thus varying degrees of geographical subdivision, ranging from no impedance of dispersal to complete isolation, often exist among taxa that span common geomorphological boundaries. Two lineages of Bathymodiolus mussels segregate on either side of the Easter Microplate, a boundary that separates the East Pacific Rise from spreading centers connected to the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. Results: A recent sample from the northwest flank of the Easter Microplate contained an admixture of northern...

Approches culturales et moléculaires des assemblages microbiens associés aux polychètes hydrothermaux de la famille Alvinellidae ArchiMer
Alain, Karine.
Cultural and molecular approaches were used to analyse the microbial assemblages associated to the deep-sea hydrothermal vent polychaete worms of the family Alvinellidae. In a first part of the work, the populations associated to three alvinellid species from the Juan de Fuca Ridge (Paralvinella palmiformis, Paralvinella pandorae and Paralvinella sulfincola) were identified by phylogenetic analyses. A wide microbial diversity was detected, like a great number of new sequences or of sequences belonging to species previously unidentified at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. All the libraries were found to be dominated by sequences affiliated to the epsilon-Proteobacteria. In other respects, fermentative micro-organisms belonging to the Thermococcales, the...

Behavioural observations of the cephalopod Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis ArchiMer
Rocha, Francisco; Gonzalez, Angel; Segonzac, Michel; Guerra, Angel.
Introduction : The hydrothermal vent ecosystem is inhabited by poorly known species of deep-sea octopuses (Lutz & Voight, 1994). Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis Gonzalez & Guerra, 1998, is the only described cephalopod from a hydrothermal vent (Gonzalez et al., 1998). Little is known about this small benthic octopus, up to 35 mm mantle length, with a muscular and semi-translucent body, lack of any type of chromatic elements in the skin and eye with no trace of an iris (Gonzalez et al., 1998). Its morphology was studied by Gonzalez et al. (in press) but there have been no behavioural studies of this species to date. Most observations of octopus behaviour in abyssal environments, mainly Cirroctopoda, have been described from videotape records (Boletzky...

Benthic copepod communities associated with tubeworm and mussel aggregations on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer
Gollner, S; Zekely, J; Van Dover, C; Govenar, B; Le Bris, Nadine; Nemeschkal, H; Bright, M.
Variability in the structure of the meiobenthic copepod communities was studied among three vent sites on the East Pacific Rise. One of the sites was dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus, and the other two of the sites were dominated by the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila. In addition to the differences in the dominant megafauna, the maximum temperatures were much lower at the mussel-dominated sites, and the temperature to sulfide ratio was different between the tubeworm-dominated sites. A total of 22 vent endemic siphonostomatoid copepod species and 5 harpacticoid copepod species were identified among the three sites. Copepod abundance was low at all sites (< 1 - 31 ind. 10 cm(-2)). Species richness ranged from 6 - 14, Shannon-Wiener diversity...

Changes of gill and hemocyte-related bio-indicators during long term maintenance of the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus held in aquaria at atmospheric pressure ArchiMer
Bettencourt, R; Dando, P; Rosa, D; Riou, V; Colaco, A; Sarrazin, Jozee; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Santos, R.
The deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus has been the subject of several studies aimed at understanding the physiological adaptations that vent animals have developed in order to cope with the particular physical and chemical conditions of hydrothermal environments. In spite of reports describing successful procedures to maintain vent mussels under laboratory conditions at atmospheric pressure, few studies have described the mussel's physiological state after a long period in aquaria. In the present study, we investigate changes in mucocytes and hemocytes in B. azoricus over the course of several months after deep-sea retrieval. The visualization of granules of mucopolysaccharide or glycoprotein was made possible through their inherent...

Community dynamics over a decadal scale at Logatchev, 14 degrees 45 ' N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Gebruk, Andrey; Fabri, Marie-claire; Briand, Patrick; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
Hydrothermal vent community dynamics over a ten year span was studied in the Logatchev area, 14 degrees 45'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the SERPENTINE cruise in March 2007 with the RN Pourquoi pas? and the ROV Victor 6000 (IFREMER), composition, abundance and distribution of dominant megafauna at Logatchev were examined and compared to published data from 1997. Our results revealed notable changes in several community characteristics. The most significant changes evident in March 2007 compared to July 1997 were the increase up to by order of magnitude in the population density of predatory gastropods Phymorchynchus spp. at the site Irina-2 and disappearance of a live population of vesicomyids at the site Anya's Garden. Comparison of microbial communities associated with three Atlantic ultramafic hydrothermal systems ArchiMer
Roussel, Erwan; Konn, Cecile; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves; Querellou, Joel; Prieur, Daniel; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
The distribution of Archaea and methanogenic, methanotrophic and sulfate-reducing communities in three Atlantic ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems (Rainbow, Ashadze, Lost City) was compared using 16S rRNA gene and functional gene (mcrA, pmoA and dsrA) clone libraries. The overall archaeal community was diverse and heterogeneously distributed between the hydrothermal sites and the types of samples analyzed (seawater, hydrothermal fluid, chimney and sediment). The Lost City hydrothermal field, characterized by high alkaline warm fluids (pH>11; T<95 °C), harbored a singular archaeal diversity mostly composed of unaffiliated Methanosarcinales. The archaeal communities associated with the recently discovered Ashadze 1 site, one of the deepest active...

Jiang, Lijing; L'Haridon, Stephane; Jebbar, Mohamed; Xu, Hongxiu; Alain, Karine; Shao, Zongze.
Kosmotoga pacifica strain SLHLJ1T is a thermophilic chemoorganoheterotrophic bacterium isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal sediment. It belongs to the physiologically homogeneous Thermotogaceae family. Here, we describe the phenotypic features of K. pacifica together with its genome sequence and annotation. The chromosome has 2,169,170 bp, organized in one contig. A total of 1897 candidate protein-encoding genes and 177 RNA genes were identified. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain is distantly related to sequences of some relatives classified in the same genus (K. olearia 7.02% and K. shengliensis 7.83%), with dissimilarity percentages close to the threshold generally described for genus delineation. Nevertheless, the percentage of conserved...

A new species, Tisbe dahmsi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) is described from the Eiffel Tower edifice located in the Lucky Strike vent field (37 degrees N) (Mid-Atlantic Ridge MAR, 1698 m). The samples were collected in colonization experiments (SMAC arrays) that were deployed in 1997 during the MARVEL cruise and recovered in 1998 during the PICO cruise. Other specimens were collected during the MoMARETO cruise during which a physico-chemical characterization of copepod microhabitats was done. The new species belongs to the T. gracilis group based on similarities of the spine-like inner seta on the proximal endopodal segment of the male second swimming leg, which is terminally bifurcate. Desulfurobacterium indicum sp nov., a thermophilic sulfur-reducing bacterium from the Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Cao, Junwei; Birien, Tiphaine; Gayet, Nicolas; Huang, Zhaobin; Shao, Zongze; Jebbar, Mohamed; Alain, Karine.
A novel sulfur-reducing bacterium, strain K6013(T), was isolated from a sulfide sample collected at a depth of 2771 m from a high-temperature hydrothermal vent in the Indian Ocean. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, anaerobic, motile rods (0.92.2 x 0.4-0.6 mu m). The strain grew at NaCl concentrations ranging from 1 to 4.5% (w/v) (optimum 2.5 %), at pH 5 to 8 (optimum pH 6), and at temperatures between 40 and 75 degrees C (optimum 65 degrees C). K6013(T) was an obligate chemolithoautotroph, using thiosulfate, sulfur and nitrate as terminal electron acceptors in the presence of H-2 but not sulfate, sulfite nor nitrite. The major cellular fatty acids were C-16 : 0 (17.4 %), C-18 : 1 omega 7c/C-18 : 1 omega 6c (ummed feature 8, 37.91 %), C-18 : 0 (18.29 %) and...

Dispersion of deep-sea hydrothermal vent effluents and larvae by submesoscale and tidal currents ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Gula, Jonathan; Roullet, Guillaume; Pradillon, Florence.
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents provide sources of geochemical materials that impact the global ocean heat and chemical budgets, and support complex biological communities. Vent effluents and larvae are dispersed and transported long distances by deep ocean currents, but these currents are largely undersampled and little is known about their variability. Submesoscale (0.1–10 km) currents are known to play an important role for the dispersion of biogeochemical materials in the ocean surface layer, but their impact for the dispersion in the deep ocean is unknown. Here, we use a series of nested regional oceanic numerical simulations with increasing resolution (from δx=6km to δx=0.75km) to investigate the structure and variability of highly-resolved deep currents...

Distribution and spatial variation of hydrothermal faunal assemblages at Lucky Strike (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) revealed by high-resolution video image analysis ArchiMer
Cuvelier, Daphne; Sarrazin, Jozee; Colaco, Ana; Copley, Jon; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Glover, Adrian G.; Tyler, Paul; Santos, Ricardo Serrao.
Whilst the fauna inhabiting hydrothermal vent structures in the Atlantic Ocean is reasonably well known, less is understood about the spatial distributions of the fauna in relation to abiotic and biotic factors. In this study, a major active hydrothermal edifice (Eiffel Tower, at 1690 m depth) on the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)) was investigated. Video transects were carried out by ROV Victor 6000 and complete image coverage was acquired. Four distinct assemblages, ranging from dense larger-sized Bathymodiolus mussel beds to smaller-sized mussel clumps and alvinocaridid shrimps, and two types of substrata were defined based on high definition photographs and video imagery. To evaluate spatial variation, faunal distribution was mapped...

Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp mussel from a methane seep on the gabon continental margin (southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Nadalig, Thierry; Caprais, Jean-claude; Sibuet, Myriam; Fiala Medioni, Aline; Amann, Rudolf; Dubilier, Nicole.
Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy, comparative 16S rRNA analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that this Bathymodiolus sp. lives in a dual symbiosis with sulfide- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. A distinct distribution pattern of the symbiotic bacteria in the gill epithelium was observed, with the thiotrophic symbiont dominating the apical region and the methanotrophic symbiont...
